Providence Urban Land Reform
The Providence Land Information System is an interactive database search and mapping application that contains data on every property in the City of Providence. Along with standard data on land and buildings from the Assessor's office, it includes data on foreclosure, utility delinquency, and City housing code and health code enforcement actions, etc.. In addition, the database contains the results of an ongoing citywide survey of unutilized and abandoned property. The result of the combination of these indicators is a comprehensive, integrated, urban land information system. Click on the image to the right to enter the search application.

The information system provides different types of knowledge to meet the goals of both community and government partners:

  • Data at face value, much of which was not conveniently available prior to the tool;
  • Shared “local knowledge” through property comment feature;
  • The location of “hubs,” or properties and small areas where incidents stack and cluster; and
  • Predictive variables in the form of “indicator incidents”, known to be shared by many abandoned properties.

There are also many levels of search capability and mapping function to accommodate both basic and advanced users. More information on the development of indicators used in the database can be found here. Further details about the citywide survey of unutilized and abandoned property are here.
